The General Direction of Universities, Research and Knowledge Transfer, jointly with the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Institute of Business Innovation of the Balearic Islands (IDI), organizes the third edition of this Forum as a meeting between research groups of the knowledge or technological centers of the island, and the technology based companies by means of the clusters that represent them, and to which our general direction and the IDI belong as a partners. These Clusters, or Groupings of Innovative Companies, take a narrow participation in the organization for being an object and final cause of the event.
The Council of Education, Culture and Universities, by means of the Headquarter of the Universities, Research and Knowledge Transfer of the Government of the Balearic Islands, exerts the authority on promotion, development and coordination of the science, technology and innovation system of the Balearic Islands and has developed in the field of its matters the Science, Technology and Innovation Plan of the Balearic Islands 2009-2012 (PCTI).
One of the axes of the program of the PCTI (specifically the axis 4.3.3. on the innovation) foresees definitely the politics of clusters, as the channel to have a bearing on the innovation scene actors and to support the creation of competitive environments, trying so the companies being more innovative and having better access to the knowledge economy. The definition of a cluster is that of a geographical concentration of interrelated companies that cover all or the greater part of the value chain, which compete against each other but also cooperate. These characteristic elements permit companies to obtain synergies and establish means of cooperation which, combined with the effectiveness resulting from know-how acquired, results in greater competitiveness both for the companies themselves as well as for the region as a whole.
Six I.E.A. o clusters take part in Forotec, that represent six of the economic sectors detected as priorities in the PCTI 2009-2012: technological innovation for the tourism, technology of the information and the communication applied to the tourism, musical activity of Ibiza, audiovisual, biotechnology and maritime, of which three already have been recognized and inscribed as a groupings of innovative companies in the PIMES general direction of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.
